Things You Will Never Understand

You will never know how much I love you.

When you are grown and become a mother, and I hope you become a mother, you still will not understand how much I love you.

But you will understand what it must have been like for me when you were a baby. You will feel that same intense, incredible, indescribable love for your baby. But you still will not know how much I love you.

I finally have a sense of how my mom loved me. But I don’t understand it completely because love like this doesn’t travel that direction.

Waterfalls do not flow up. Only down. And they never run dry.

So I know you will never love me like I love you. I know that because I finally understand love between parents and children. Children have reasonable love for their parents. Parents, mothers especially, have unreasonable, psychotic love for their babies.

I know you will love your baby with the same irrational love. But you will never understand how much I love you.

How do I love thee? I cannot count the ways.

My friend, this hit the nail right on the head (I hope I got this one right) :).

It is hard to really convey a mother’s love, but I think you summed it up perfectly: “Waterfalls do not flow up. Only down. And they never run dry.”

I associated this with the Bible verse that says “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11 .

If I, being evil, have this intense love for my children, the knowledge that God’s love is so much stronger than that is so overwhelming.

Thank you for sharing these words with us.

Vero – Yes, I think about that often, too. If nothing else, becoming a mother has made me realize how much God really loves me. I’m his child. And I know what it feels like, if only in human terms, to love a child. How much greater is his love! What wouldn’t I do for my child? Nothing. And what has he withheld from me? Nothing! Thanks for writing about this. And yes, you got the idiom right. 🙂
